Too often do I find myself a photographer for other people’s benefit. I take photos hoping someone will like them and show interest in me, and even then I doubt whether they’re worthy of praise. Whether it be mentors, colleagues, friends or strangers, I can’t escape this need to impress others with my photography. This series is for me to enjoy and prove to myself that my skills are good enough without validation from others. For this series, I channeled my macro roots, but with a primary focus on pattern and texture. I am inspired by photographers Shelly Still and Paul Mitchell, the former for her use of light on various surfaces and objects, creating both beautiful textures and colours, and the latter for his natural textures and forms. Whether people are impressed by my work is no longer my biggest concern - it’s what to photograph next.
