Richard III

This type specimen poster showcases a new experimental typeface called ‘Richard III’. A take on the play by William Shakespeare. Original text: “Tut, tut, thou art all ice; thy kindness freezes.” Richard — who was just crowned king of England, and asked Buckingham to get rid of the rightful heirs, which Buckingham wasn’t too fond of — tells Buckingham that he became rather icy. That his friendliness towards Richard seems to be freezing over. In this piece the quote was chosen to capture the process of experimental typography/design and the practice of creating letters from tactile materials. The process can be frustrating and unkind, “frozen” in a sense. The red thread represents a connection that has no place, no time and no circumstances. The connection between man and art, the connection between Shakespeare and his words or a painter and his canvas. A connection that sometimes freezes over but always comes back around to melt again. Honourable Mention at the GDC/BC Salazar Student Awards.
