Yokai Cards

Yokai Cards are illustrated face cards designed based on Yokai, which are a class of supernatural monsters, spirits and demons often told in Japanese folklore. The project involved creating twelve face cards of each suit, as well as the Joker card and back pattern. The Kitsune (fox), Hebi (snake), Okami (wolf), and Jorogumo (spider) were chosen since they characterize the King, Queen, Jack, and Joker respectively due to their similar personalities and behaviours. Each illustration The As many Yokai can transform between human form and animal form, each face card shows both variations when flipped upside down. The pattern on for the back of the cards was inspired by traditional Japanese kimono patterns but modernized with bright, highly saturated colours.
