Meisō Restaurant

This project was designed as the final project for the second commercial design course. The course primarily focused on hospitality and restaurant design, ranging from small eateries to larger high end restaurants. For this final project, we were provided with an existing commercial space in which our restaurant would need to fit within. The type of restaurant and design direction were entirely up to us. We were able to choose whether it be a casual or high-end setting, the type of cuisine that would be served, and how the overall design would look. For my project I decided to design a high-end Japanese restaurant called Meisō, which translates to meditation in Japanese. The idea of meditation served as one of the main concepts for the design, which is represented through the minimal and calming look and feel of the space. The restaurant is indented to serve as a space where people can gather, socialize and relax. One of the main inspirations for the design was Wabi-Sabil, which is a Japanese aesthetic and way of life based on the concepts of imperfection and impermanence. Rather than the traditional concepts of beauty that are found in perfection, Wabi-Sabi seeks to find a deeper beauty in life based on the fact that most things are imperfect and fleeting. It places an emphasis on natural materials that show their life and age. The aesthetic is also based around asymmetry and simplicity, creating a quiet and serene environment.
