Staged Portraiture

In this project, I explored the possibilities of storytelling through portraitures during each art history. I conceptualized and plotted my own character portraiture based on the research about surrealism portraiture. And I used the photography techniques covered in class to create a series of staged portraits. My character is stuck in her nightmare. She is struggled by study and score. She is helpless in this situation. The character is standing in the middle of the frame, and it makes the composition symmetrical. The background is grading paper with red marks on it. The use of red is to create intense colour contrast. The colour tone of the frame is cold and blurry. There are desks float in the air; it expresses the grotesque elements of the Surrealism period. The colourful paper crane is placed on the desks on the ground. It represents the character’s inner world; also, bright colours enhance the picture's visual effect. There are dry symmetrical branches behind the character. The balanced structure makes the dry branches look like the wings of the character. The paper crane covers the character’s eyes. The paper clip rain connects with the Surrealism artist Rene Magritte. The work smells like fear and hopelessness. It feels a tingling sensation when the audience touches it. The texture of the picture tastes like withered grass. It sounds like nails scratching on the blackboard. The theme and colour tone of the work reflects the winter season.
