Is It Cold In Cyberspace?

"Is It Cold In Cyberspace" touches on the strangling, suffocating incarceration of mental illness through an internet lens. As a person who has been present in cyberspace from an extremely young age and growing up in a society that continually integrates modern technology into everyday lives, and has created oneself a social media presence by nine years old, I find it is intelligent and profound by my own experiences to be able to circumnavigate and protect one’s online adventure, which directly affect the wellbeing of the real self. The project was inspired by Is It Cold In the Water by SOPHIE (Flume and Eprom remix). The lyrics gave a prompt idea of feeling distress, that of which the internet can provide it’s online user platform; especially young and impressionable users. The instruments and area of sound from the SOPHIE remix drive the visual inspiration; heavenly metallic and futuristic. The Persistence of Memory by Salvador Dalí, and both films, Blade Runner 2049 and The Matrix influenced the overall aesthetic and visuals of the project. With personal insecurities as one major target marketing tactic, tech companies designing apps to constantly pull us into their cyber hole of advertising revenue, and social media platforms allowing users to filter aspects of their lives, it brings too much control for some. For others? Pressure to achieve a now constructed idea of perfection, and what it might feel like when you realise that is not your life. Not only that but the opinions others may have about it. Tech and social media is such a useful and convenient tool in enriching every day life, and bringing the vastness of the earth together when used responsibly and in a healthy manner. But with this immense power at the hands of many, it is important to stay vigilant within this vast digital space in your hands, you may get lost, hurt and feeling more alone than drifting through the cosmos.
