Micro-Dwelling Design

The intention of this design is to provide urban youth with a private space along with a comfortable social environment, allowing engagement with neighbors. For many single young people today, the convenience and practicality of house is what they value. They do not want a large space requiring a number of furniture pieces, or a high mortgage or rent. They just need the basics: a bed, a desk, a sofa, a cup of coffee, a laptop, and a lazy afternoon (translate this into functions/ spaces for e.g. a place to sleep, eat, rest). They need their own space, the one can switch back and forth between office, home theater, bedroom, kitchen, dining room and bathroom. A re-design an existing apartment into a contemporary micro-dwelling apartment is now a necessity, with a focus on how to maximize the rational use of space, natural light collection, ventilation, and abundant storage space in a limited space. To achieve this free-multifunctional space, each space in the room will be arranged into a small square, such as closet, kitchen counter, refrigerator, bookshelf, etc., and make them as a unified facade. Take advantage of the open layout to relieve room congestion while maximizing natural light; the usable area will be increased by using the split-layer principle; Using vertical space to increase horizontal space, so that people have more space to hang out, such as folding a bed vertically when not in use, turning it into a part of a wall, or folding a dining table into millworks.

CONCEPT

“Transformable” is the aim of this design. The inspiration came from Tangram, all millworks and furniture are like dissection puzzle pieces, which can be freely divided or combined to meet different daily needs. Using the simplest natural colors and clear layouts to express a feeling of spaciousness, comfort and efficiency while shrinking the space.
