Biography

When I was young, I found myself mystified and obsessed with dinosaurs. Something about the fact that these monstrous creatures used the roam the very same earth we did had me totally enthralled. So, when I saw Jurassic Park at the tender age of nine, needless to say I was floored beyond belief. Something about the magic and wonder of this movie did it for me, now the shelf of DVDs my dad had didn't seem like decorations to me. They seemed like a challenge. I quickly consumed as many as I could and soon enough watching a movie became my favorite pastime. But it wasn't until high school, when I took my first video production class, that I realized a living could actually be made working in this industry. I enrolled in the Film Studies Program at The University of Missouri and received my Bachelor’s of Arts in it as well. Here, I was able to hone my creative voice and pick apart what I loved most in the films I watch. I learned that sci-fi and horror are my two favorite genres because they were able to paint fantastic and crazy worlds unlike anything else I would see in day to day life. But, all of the best examples in both of those genres for me critique the real world in doing so as well. Jurassic Park was about man’s ignorance of the natural order, and the consequences of man trying to act like gods. Stories like this provide new meaning and context for my life, and tend to be the kinds of stories I write myself as well for the same reason. After graduating this program, I realized my tool set was strong to speak and write about film academically, the problem is I really wanted to make them though. I relocated to Vancouver and enrolled in LaSalle College because their diploma program had a strong technical emphasis to it. Here I was able to fill in the blanks, to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation for the art of digital filmmaking. With both my creative and technical skills strengthened, I felt finally I had the full artist’s toolbox I needed to be successful. Everyday I wake up excited to challenge myself with a new project, and it’s because of that I can’t imagine working any other profession. Because in the movie industry the second you think life’s getting stagnant and you need a surprise, I remember the words of a wise man “Life uhh… finds a way.”
