Spiritual Pavilion

The Senior Project for the Interior Design program spanned the course of 2 quarters, a period of 6 months. The project was based on a design competition titled Architecture on the Clock, a competition that places an emphasis on temporary architecture. The requirements for the project are that the structure needs to exist in its environment for a period of time less than 1 year, meaning that it needs to be easy to transport, assemble and disassemble. The competition outlines 4 different types of structures that can be designed. The first type is a Pavilion, an open structure that provides shelter or serves as a gathering space. The second is a Pop-Up, a structure that appears and often serves a commercial purpose. The third type is Sculptural, an artistic structure created from physical materials that represents something, someone or a particular idea. And the fourth type is a Useful structure, a design that serves a certain purpose. Finally, the project can be designed in 1 of 3 scales, Small, Medium or Large. For my project, I chose to design a Pavilion, but I wanted for the structure to be more than just a physical space that people could move through and experience. I wanted it to be a place that brings people together and promotes community and gathering. This idea led me to designing this Spiritual Pavilion, a performance and gathering space that can be used for a variety of uses including music, theater, art, ceremonies, public talks and community events. The design was inspired by a number of religious structures, chapels and temples. The main idea behind this was to create a spiritual place, a space where the performance and people’s experience are heightened. While wanting to create this type of experience, it was also important that the pavilion remains open and accepting to everyone. To achieve this, the structure has little ornamentation. The design is intended to be recognized and celebrated, but at the same time it is able to adapt to the particular performance that is taking place.
