Red Death Project

When I read the short story Red Death I was automatically captivated. I saw this cool, dark, captivating Cinematic movie. My favorite colors are black and red, which I saw the opportunity to exploit in every costume. I also loved the dark aspect to this story. The world I imagined was a mix of old renaissance but with this new neon rave era. All the people in the mansion want is to party, they drink and take drugs to forget their guilt. But every time the clocks strikes midnight their conscience kicks in high or not, drunk or not; for that 1 minute they feel the pain of the people they abandoned outside. I love Alexander McQueen and I find the brand is excellent at portraying this old mixed with new style in his clothes. The costumes I designed for Princess Prospero is her favorite masquerade costume and then the second is during another evening but it is the costume that represents her after her death.

This is my mood board for my Red Death character.

This is my mood board for my character Scarlet, who was based on all the people dying of the disease outside of the mansion, the abandoned population.

This is my mood board for my representation of Prince Prospero, who I ended up making him a her, a princess instead of a prince.

I ended up making the costume for Princess Prospero. Here is the final illustration for this costume. While everyone is dying outside, the Princess protects herself by locking herself in her mansion with all her rich friends. She is healthy, extravagant, a little crazy but most importantly she is selfish and heartless. She is ugly inside and her costume reflects this ugliness and the disease that finally catches up to her at the end of the story. On the right side her there is what is left of her outfit, her beauty, extravagance and love of gold is shown a little more. She has an obsession for fashion, gold, colors, neon and overall eccentricity.
