Steps to Hope

Steps to hope is a book about the journey of a ten-year-old girl diagnosed with cancer in her left leg. The book highlights key events throughout her battle which is matched with a hand done drawing.  The design of the book is simplistic, yet the story contains a great deal of detail. The pages utilize lots of white space to emphasise the hand-drawn illustration. The drawings show visual consistency throughout the book, as they only show the legs of the girl which shows the changes her left leg underwent throughout her battle. Each drawing is created using watercolour to provoke emotion as at the beginning both legs are the same colour but as time goes by, the left leg loses its colour and turns towards blue tones, demonstrating the effect cancer has on the girl’s body. The book is written in the first-person point of view allowing individuals to put themselves in her shoes.
