WITHIN

Within is based on my upcoming personal fashion collection titled Eraclea. It centres around designing garments that empower people to embrace embrace their own values. To achieve this, I deploy mechanisms that incite fear in order to protect the wearer throughout their development. As this photoshoot is a reflection of my collection, the featured clothing is oriented around tropes found in my designs such as twists, coverings, and organic, sculptured spikes. This collection of photos gradually tells a story of One who tears through their protective cocoon to finally embrace their full potential, exposing their true self to the world. It begins with body language that expresses the commencement of inner struggle, then gradually becomes more contorted and intense, culminating in the transformation that finally reveals the true face of the subject to the world. I utilized a high-contrast filter to allow the overall emotion to be paramount, while the clothing and props were used to uphold the overall narrative of Under My Skin. The goal was to focus on the subject’s body language or facial expression, and how it is juxtaposed with the main props (the spiked sculptures). Thus, I decided that the best photography method was a combination of editorial fashion photography with some staged photography. Essentially, the photoshoot was meant to be free of any rules that would impede creative freedom. Likewise, the photography approaches utilized are a mix of multiple angle shots including close-ups, profiles, and overheads to capture the subject’s process of obtaining control over themselves. As a result, in combining all these techniques, I achieved a collection of photos that reflects the exact emotion that I sought to capture, which will propel me into further developing my Under My Skin fashion collection.
